Take a picture 1800 style! To start off the project the first lecture was given by Mark Ingham. This lecture was a big insight to what photography is about and different peoples perspective of it really is. The beginning of the lecture was more on the history side as a lot of

the information supplied was linked to how photography was taken back in the 1800’s.

Some of the facts I noted down were:

– The first ever photo taken was during 1826

– “Eye Piece” Rudimental

– Some of the famous photographers back then were: “Susan Sontag” and “Roland Bartz”

– Photography was a big thing during and around 1839 as that was when the first photographs were being seriously published and it was “weird to see yourself back then”

We begun to speak about what tools were used back in those times as well to assist photography. Some of the tools that were used were: Adjustable tongs (My guess) which is like an old fashioned clamp however this was used to make people stand still allowing the photographer to get better lighting and exposure whilst ensuring that they are in the same position from the start.

This method of maintaining a pose was more difficult then it seemed, as they had to maintain that pose for up to and over 30 minutes long. The tall, slim device to maintain the models pose was used in a sly and hidden fashion. Having the clamp just behind the model that held their head securely in place whilst they were sitting down was the way to hide it from being exposed in photos. We then watched a movie which consisted of still images and a voice over. It was difficult to keep concentrated however, it showed me how images can tell a story easily without moving visuals.

Some of these tools for the photographer are below:

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A ‘SELFIE’ AND A ‘SELF PORTRAIT’

We looked at some of Philip lorca’s work and a video that was titled: ‘Dicorcia’ and this was about photography from his perspective and how he took his photos. He mentioned how he feels about pictures that are taken when the model/people has prepared for it and pictures that are taken when models/people aren’t ready for it and he feels that: “Photos that are taken when people are natural or not ready expresses who the person is more then when people are ready for the picture. It is as if they are conveying something that they are not.” Some of Dicorcia’s work is below and shows how he uses natural light, anybody and everybody and his camera to take this tool assisted looking photos:

Now for something a little bit different…Mr. Barrack Obama and his ‘Selfie Game’ ruined his seating plan as Michelle undoubtedly noticed their youth like behaviour. What a selfie though…

Being used to taking photos I’ve never really been to fond of taking ‘Direct Selfies’ only when there is nobody there to take the picture for me however, procrastinating on my Macbook or having a laugh with a mate has resulted into a few at home.

I must become a journalist and be prepared to write notes from each lessons that will contribute to the content of my new blog which will be created using ‘myblog.com’. There will be eight lectures and I must write at least 300 words about what was done in each one. They will all cover different graphical mediums and I must chose one of the eight lectures that I wish to research into farther.
